📄 Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a common hormonal condition that effects women of reproductive age. It usually starts during, adolescence, but symptoms may fluctuate overtime. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, excess androgen level and cysts in the ovaries. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program regarding the knowledge of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in selected Higher Secondary School of Aizawl, Mizoram. METHODS: The study adopted a Pre-experimental (one group pre-test post-test design), 100 samples of adolescent girl students Higher Secondary School standard were selected for the study using Non-Probability purposive sampling technique. Demographic variables and Self-Structured knowledge questionnaire were used to collect data required for the study. RESULTS: The majority of respondents were 17-18 years old (89%), followed by 15-16 years (11%). All participants were Christian. Educationally, 33% of the student’s mother attained higher secondary school and 30% attained high school and 37% of the student’s father attained high school and 29% were graduates and above where 26% attained higher secondary School. Regarding family type, 64% belongs to joint family and 36% to nuclear families. 61% were from Urban areas and 39% were from rural areas. In terms of prior knowledge of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, 56% had no previous knowledge, while 20% had knowledge from their family members. The analysis shows that among the selected 100 adolescent girls, in the pre-test score, majority 34% have inadequate knowledge scoring below the range of 0-7, 66% were under moderate knowledge scoring between 8-14, and none were under adequate knowledge range ( ie. Score range between 15-20) . According to the post-test score, majority 91% were having adequate knowledge, scoring between 15-20 , while 66% were having moderate knowledge, scoring between the range of 8-14 . Chi-square analysis reveals that there is a significant association between pre-test knowledge score regarding Polycystic Ovary Syndrome with selected demographic variables like, Age, Religion, Education of Mother, Education of Father, Occupation of Mother, Occupation of Father, Type of Family, Area of Residence and Source of information at 0.05 level of significance. Thus, the research hypotheses were accepted. CONCLUSION: The study concludes that the Structured Teaching Programme on knowledge regarding Polycystic Ovary Syndrome among adolescent girls in selected Higher Secondary School of Aizawl, Mizoram was effective.
