📄 Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are prevalent brain tumours and are commonly found at the skull base and one of the complications of skull base meningioma is transient ischemic attack which leads to motor paresis. Virtual reality offers a promising and potential approach for rehabilitating stroke patients by providing engaging, cognitively challenging and motivating therapy for patients. It can fasten the functional recovery, particularly for upper limb impairments, and improve activities of daily living. Virtual reality therapy has also been implemented to improve balance, postural control and quality of life in typical stroke cases and elderly patients. But there is lack of evidences of effectiveness of virtual reality on functional balance, fall risk prevention and quality of life in meningioma induced hemiparesis patients. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of virtual reality on functional balance, fall risk prevention and quality of life in a in a post-operative meningioma induced hemiparesis patient. METHODOLOGY: The selected patient who fulfilled the inclusion criteria underwent pretest evaluation by Berg Balance Scale, Falls Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT) and SF-36. Then the patient was given Virtual Reality Therapy along with conventional therapy for 6 days/week for 45 days. Post test evaluation was done by using Berg Balance Scale, Falls Risk Assessment Tool and SF-36 after 45 days and the collected data was analysed by inferential statistics. RESULT: There was statistically significant improvement found in mean pretest and posttest scores in Berg Balance Scale, Falls Risk Assessment Tool and SF-36. Statistically major correlation was found between these scores of scales. CONCLUSION The results of the study suggested that virtual reality can be used to enhance functional balance, prevention of fall risk and quality of life of patients with meningioma induced hemiparesis.
