📄 Abstract
Government welfare schemes play an important role in promoting social protection, livelihood security and economic empowerment among rural women. Although numerous welfare and development programmes have been introduced by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, the extent to which rural women are able to access and utilize these schemes and convert the benefits into sustainable economic opportunities remains an important research issue. The present study examines the relationship between government welfare schemes and the economic empowerment of rural women in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. The study focuses on awareness, accessibility and utilization of selected welfare schemes and their association with income generation, employment opportunities, savings, financial independence and entrepreneurship. Primary data are proposed to be collected from 500 rural women through a structured questionnaire using a systematic empirical research design. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, chi-square tests, correlation, regression analysis and factor analysis may be employed to examine the research objectives and hypotheses. The study also examines the institutional, informational, financial, digital and procedural barriers faced by rural women in accessing welfare benefits. The study is expected to provide evidence on whether welfare interventions are merely functioning as short-term social protection mechanisms or are contributing to sustained economic empowerment. The findings can assist policymakers and implementing agencies in improving awareness mechanisms, simplifying access procedures, strengthening financial inclusion and promoting women-oriented livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities in rural areas.
