📄 Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of correctional officers in managing high-risk inmates at the Maximum-Security Compound of New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, Philippines. Specifically, it examined their experiences, the insights they gained, and the implications of these experiences for correctional management. The study employed a descriptive phenomenological research design involving seven (7) purposively selected correctional officers with direct experience in managing high-risk Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). Data were gathered through semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analyzed using Moustakas’ Modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen Method. The results have shown that working within the correctional environment can be very challenging, requiring constant alertness, good judgement, communication skills, teamwork and emotional control. The participants stressed the need to achieve a balance between maintaining security and discipline within the institution, while being fair and respectful towards others. It was evident that participants had made many personal and professional sacrifices, such as missing out on time with their families, worries about finances and pressure at work. However, they found that they had many strengths within their role through training, guidance, belief, family support and teamwork. This study has highlighted the importance of continuing professional development, sufficient resources, staff support, ethical practice and effective risk management to improve the correctional environment and to ensure that PDLs are treated with dignity and respect.
