📄 Abstract
Academic culture shock is preventing an adult learner from returning to school. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the perceptions of adult learners returning to college education after more than a decade were explored. I interviewed six adult learners and analyzed their responses using thematic analysis. I found that adult learners undergo transformative phases, which affirm theory and yield new insights. I advocate for stronger support systems and programs that encourage and sustain adult learners in achieving college success. Future research may examine mediating effects and develop measurement instruments.
