📄 Abstract

The squid jigging fishery has emerged as an efficient and environmentally sustainable fishing method along the south-east coast of India. This paper reviews the status and performance of squid jigging operations using biodegradable fish aggregating devices (FADs). The study focuses on catch efficiency, production trends, species composition, and environmental sustainability. Results indicate higher production in the Gulf of Mannar, while Palk Bay shows better efficiency. Biodegradable FADs reduce marine pollution and support small-scale fisheries. However, challenges such as durability and lack of standardization persist. The study concludes that biodegradable FAD-based squid jigging is a sustainable fishing approach requiring policy and technological support.
