📄 Abstract
Rajput warfare is an important part of the military history of medieval India․ Rajputs of the region of today's Rajasthan and its adjacent borders developed a tradition of warfare characterized by valor‚ loyalty to clan‚ defence of territory‚ mobility of cavalry‚ fortification of forts and honor․ Weapons were symbols of power‚ sovereignty‚ worship and chivalry․ Swords‚ spears‚ bows‚ shields‚ daggers and horses were the symbols of Rajput battlefield culture and the weapons were considered the most prestigious element of it․ It describes Rajput arms and tactics: hand-to-hand combat (sword)‚ spear and lance tactics‚ archery‚ cavalry‚ fortification and field defense‚ guerrilla warfare‚ and Rajput martial traditions․ The author argues that Rajput warfare has a chivalric martial tradition and practical warfare‚ was influenced with geographic and tactical choices‚ and shaped by the political needs and culture․ The Rajput armies‚ whose clan rivalries and uneven adaptation to gunpowder and their over-reliance on deeds of valor in frontal assaults‚ meant that their military tradition of defence of fortresses‚ of cavalry warfare‚ of personal gallantry and of resistance would live on‚ if only in memory․
