📄 Abstract
Urban areas around the world especially in the developing countries are experiencing unprecedented increases in their population and the impact of this population growth on the urban environment has become obvious. This study examines population growth in the Yaounde metropolitan area from the year 2000 to 2020 and the implications on the population-environment nexus with particular focus on those aspects where human activities have the greatest impacts. The study makes use of a mixed method design where questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and field observations were used to collect primary data from the sampled population. The results of the study revealed that the population of Yaounde has increased rapidly over the last two decades with over a million people adding to the population every ten years between 2000 and 2020. Biodiversity loss, Land use and land cover (LULC) change, poor waste management, air pollution, and micro-climate change are among the biggest and visible indicators of the ecological implications of population growth in the Yaounde metropolitan area.
